Interview with Charlotta Holmquist

The Swedish Start-Up Ecosystem: Blixt and Sweden’s energy start-ups

Sweden’s start-up ecosystem is one of Europe’s most dynamic and innovative with many companies dedicated to energy transition. This is part three of our interview series about Sweden and its‘ energy start-ups. We recently spoke to Mestro-CEO Gustav Stenbeck and Almi Invest Green Tech Fund Manager Markus Hökfelt. If you want to learn more about Swedish energy start-ups, be sure to have a look at the website of our partners from the Swedish Energy Agency.

In this edition, we have the pleasure of interviewing Charlotta Holmquist. She is a serial entrepreneur in high tech, media and transformative energy. In addition to being one of the founders of Blixt, a SET’19 Award winner, she was awarded Earlymetric’s Female Entrepreneur of the Year in 2019. During her 20+ years as an entrepreneur she has built several startups and is currently Executive Chairwoman and Co-Founder of Blixt.

Tell us about yourself, your role and your business.

Charlotta Holmquist: I am a serial entrepreneur in high tech, media and transformative energy with other 20 years of experience as entrepreneur. Blixt was founded 2018 with the goal of bringing grid-edge data intelligence to the energy supply market through the introduction of digital circuit breaker technology. Mechanical circuit breakers have been the gatekeepers of household electricity supply for around 150 years, but Blixt’s digital alternative will be a game-changer for the future of electricity management. Blixt’s solid-state circuit breaker is a response to emerging trends in global energy markets and aims to satisfy the growing demand for “grid-edge intelligence” from both consumers and power network infrastructure. Unlike conventional mechanical breakers, the Blixt Breaker can collect real-time data and remotely control all loads – all via one small connected device offered to customers in a new smart Blixt Panel with built-in voltage conversion and Home Energy Management System.

How has Sweden served your business as a Launchpad for your successes?

CH: Since we address a global market, we have looked outside Sweden for both partners and investors from day one. In particular, we are targeting European markets such as Germany, UK and France for our first rollout. On the other hand, we see many interesting and highly innovative startup initiatives coming out of Sweden. By teaming up with those we can demonstrate the full potential of our technology and use the results as showcases to potential international partners and customers.

Based on your work in the Swedish energy sector, what is your assessment of how Swedish start-ups and companies are adapting their focuses, models and products, given the rapidly evolving consumer behavior (especially during the current pandemic)?

CH: For natural reasons, startups are much quicker to adapt to changing market conditions than larger companies. I have seen many startups both in Sweden and abroad, that quickly pivot to new customer segments and business models to maneuver the current crisis. The long term effect for those who survive will likely be an even stronger business case and faster growth rate. Unfortunately the opposite might be true for the larger organizations that are less willing to pursue unknown paths during turbulent times. They just downsize rather than innovate.

Sweden has spearheaded the acceleration of digitalisation and become a hub for innovation. What are some ways that the Swedish start-up ecosystem has used such developments in the context of the global energy transition?

CH: Sweden is known for its many unicorns, such as Spotify, Klarna, Mojang and Skype. All software companies in gaming, entertainment and ICT that unfortunately have little impact on the global energy transition. Most Swedish VCs also tend to favor investments in pure software companies with potential to become the ’next Spotify’ etc. While Sweden has fairly good funding climate for early-stage clean tech companies through public grants, I would like to see more Swedish VC impact investors with a longer horizon and broader focus. In particular to startups that innovate from scratch and can bring new disruptive and game-changing technologies to the market. Those solutions will not come from the traditional industry and without the startups the energy transition will likely be much slower.

How has the current pandemic affected your work?

CH: The current pandemic has both positive and negative impacts on our business. Naturally, the investment climate is cooled down with longer lead times. We have also experienced some delays in our development due to delayed shipments (components and material) and many partners have closed down their R&D departments which has delayed demonstration and pilot projects. On the positive side, it has been very efficient work with easy access to key people at large organizations and faster lead times for decision-making, we travel around the world every day in video calls! In the end, we are probably better prepared for coming pilots and feel strong support from our partners. I have also felt that people really try to help each other, sharing their networks, and provide support. Let’s just hope the society we return to can be rebuilt by turning our climate awareness into action.

https://news.cision.com/blixt-tech-ab/r/the-swedish-energy-agency-grants-blixt–1-1m-for-its-solid-state-circuit-breakers,c3091300

The Swedish Energy Agency has granted Blixt SEK 11.5 million (about €1.1M) in support to demonstrate their solid state circuit breaker for residential homes. The new Blixt Breaker enables remote control, monitoring and automation of household electricity.

– “Digitization of the electricity grid is an absolute necessity for restructuring the energy system. We already have confirmed interest from the market for our digital smarter circuit breaker and thanks to the Swedish Energy Agency we can now start the project with pilots and get the products on the market,”says Charlotta Holmquist, Founder and Chairwoman of Blixt.

Many of the solutions required for the transition are already in place today, but they need to be demonstrated in a relevant environment in order to enter the market and be implemented in the energy system. Blixt’s digital circuit breaker is one such solution.

In the project, Blixt will finalize and demonstrate the digital Blixt Breaker together with partners to gain feedback and identify improvements before commercialization.

By creating better conditions for automated home energy management, new energy services and new business models will be possible. This can contribute to both addressing local capacity challenges in the electricity grid as well as more efficiently utilizing electricity generation in an electricity system with renewable energy sources.

– “This solution contributes to resource-efficient use of the electricity grid by allowing a flexible use of energy. We see automated control as a key to helping users change or adapt their electricity use in a sustainable way”, says Carolina Ahlqvist’s research officer at the Swedish Energy Agency.

THIS WEEK IN CLEANTECH PODCAST FEAT. CHARLOTTA HOLMQUIST

Charlotta Holmquist, Blixt – Episode 44
This Week in Cleantech
Published: 2020-01-29

Charlotta Holmquist, Blixt

Description

I first saw Charlotta pitch Blixt at Ecosummit and was subsequently introduced via my friends at BayWa Ventures. I loved her enthusiasm, and I take my hat off to anyone that has founded, exited and founded companies on many occasions. I’m sure you’ll be inspired by her story.

About our guest

Charlotta has been an entrepreneur for 20 years and active in several roles setting up businesses in various sectors from e-Commerce to gaming and later deep tech in transformative energy. She loves entrepreneurship for the opportunity to constantly learn and navigate through challenges and opportunities.

As a seasoned serial entrepreneur Charlotta started learning about the climate crisis and strongly felt she must use her accumulated experience to try to make a difference.

Blixt was founded in 2018 with the goal of bringing grid-edge data intelligence to the energy supply market through the introduction of digital circuit breaker technology.

Mechanical circuit breakers have been the gatekeepers of household electricity supply for around 150 years, but our digital alternative will be a game changer for the future of electricity management. Software is appearing in all aspects of every industry today, and it just doesn’t make sense to have an analogue, mechanical device in something so central as the entry point for electricity in a home.

The solid state circuit breaker is a response to emerging trends in global energy markets and aims to satisfy growing demand for “grid-edge intelligence” from both consumers and power network infrastructure. Blixt is so far the most ambitious challenge I have ever taken on. On the other hand, our innovations spark for an entirely new energy paradigm.
On Women’s Day 2019 Charlotta was awarded “No 1 Female Entrepreneur of the Year Globally” by the UK rating institute Earlymetrics which was of course a great honor.

About Blixt

Blixt is the first and only company to develop miniature, solid state circuit breakers for the residential market. Unlike conventional mechanical breakers, the Blixt Breaker can collect real time data and remotely control all loads – all via one small connected device that fits standard fuse boxes. The new Blixt Breakers are a game changer for the electrical system. It will enhance performance of renewable energy solutions, battery storage solutions and demand-side management at grid edge.

Meet Blixt: The Swedish disruptor developing a new generation of digital circuit breakers
By Andrew Fawthrop 28 Oct 2019
Blixt has developed a digital alternative to traditional household circuit breakers, in what it believes will be a game changer for the future of electricity management

Mechanical circuit breakers have not changed substantially for many years

Blixt was founded in 2018 with the goal of bringing grid-edge data intelligence to the energy supply market through the introduction of digital circuit breaker technology. Andrew Fawthrop spoke to co-founder and CFO Charlotta Holmquist to find out more.

Mechanical circuit breakers have been the gatekeepers of household electricity supply for around 150 years, but disruptive forces may be on the verge of upsetting this long-established technology.

Swedish technology start-up Blixt has developed a digital alternative to traditional circuit breakers, which threatens to displace its analogue ancestor by offering higher standards of control and insight into electricity monitoring.

The solid state circuit breaker is a response to emerging trends in global energy markets and aims to satisfy growing demand for “grid-edge intelligence” from both consumers and power network infrastructure.

“Software is appearing in all aspects of every industry today, and it just doesn’t make sense to have an analogue, mechanical device in something so central as the entry point for electricity in a home,” says Blixt co-founder and CFO Charlotta Holmquist.

“No-one has solved that challenge before now. Very little has been done in this area of the market when it comes to the digitisation or software control of electricity.”

Blixt says its technology will benefit both households and the wider grid by making it easier to monitor and react to the ebb and flow of electricity supply and demand – giving customers and industry the ability to make better-informed energy-management decisions based on precise real-time data.

What the Blixt solid state circuit breaker does differently
While the Blixt circuit breaker currently remains in development stage, the first-generation pilot version is expected to be deployed within the next twelve months – and Holmquist says the German and UK markets are of particular focus.

The circuit breaker devices are being designed in a way that will allow a retrofit option for existing household fuse boxes – meaning a complex and invasive installation process won’t be necessary.

Holmquist says: “When it comes to electricity, the entry point to all homes is through the fuse box.

“The end point for the utilities is the meter, and so usually they have no idea of how electricity is being consumed and neither the homeowner nor the utility can really act on any information and take active control.

“We see that by making those 150-year-old mechanical circuit breakers into smart connected devices we can provide real-time data – and with that knowledge we know what devices are on and how they are consuming electricity.”

Changing trends in both the use and generation of domestic electricity supply means established ways of grid monitoring and load balancing are changing too, and Holmquist believes her firm’s device can offer help in numerous ways.

Blixt’s home turf of Sweden is one of the leading clean energy generators in the world, but Holmquist argues that to maximise the potential of renewable power more grid-edge technologies are needed to properly handle it.

“The main benefit from the grid perspective is load balancing,” she explains.

“Grids used to have one central production source and a very predictable consumer pattern, but today you have all of these distributed energy resources from things like solar and wind alongside new disruptive loads – like people charging their electric cars at 5pm causing a huge peak.

“That’s not good from a consumer perspective, because it becomes very expensive.

“From a utility and grid perspective, you can’t really use all the renewables because they are so unpredictable.

“So just by making it easier to shift loads saves a lot of money and lot of carbon emissions by allowing clean energy to be used more efficiently.”

Solid state circuit breakers have potential to go further than smart meters
Smart meters have received a lot of attention in recent years as a means to improve the way households manage and reduce their electricity usage, but Holmquist believes that going directly into the fuse box provides an even better way to do this.

She says: “Even smart meters only collect data every 15 minutes. And they only give a very high-level aggregation of the data, so they can’t tell exactly how electricity is being used.

“They can’t shift loads or switch things on or off remotely,

“So they provide better metering data for billing purposes, but not for real knowledge or control.

The Blixt solid state circuit breaker could give greater insight and control than a smart meter (Credit: Blixt)

“The thing that makes solid state circuit breakers different is the real-time aspect and sub-metering – we can go down to the sub-meter level to really see everything that is connected.

“And we can act on that data – so if we see a load that we would like to shift, or something that is off that we want to turn on, we can do that through the circuit breakers.

“And not just ‘on or off’, but actually on a scale from zero to 100% because it’s a digital control which allows us to shift very elegantly.”

Blixt has a collaborative vision for market disruption
For a young tech start-up, moving into a vast and long-established industry with the intention of disrupting it can be a daunting prospect, but it can also be a “thrilling” one according to Holmquist.

Blixt’s view of the future is one in which it works collaboratively with the biggest players in the market, rather than trying to affect sweeping change single-handedly.

Holmquist says: “The way we see it is that they are all future customers, and we are already engaging with a handful of them.

“They are good at big volume sales and distribution, they work with installer networks and they can reach out far into the market.

“We are fast-moving and agile, we look at things differently, and we are really good at innovation.

“So if you look five years ahead, we can provide the core, IP-protected hardware, and let anyone use it. Our ambition is to make the most use of our technology – not lock it down into a proprietary solution and try to compete with those players.”
